Wood outdoor furniture pieces are a dream to own, especially because they make outdoor relaxing more fun. But wooden structures are prone to disrepair because they are porous by nature. Damage may be man-made or natural. Even the salt in the breeze can directly damage your wooden furniture. Because they are made of wood, it is necessary to protect them from the elements.

One example is the good old garden table. Log tables are usually functional as picnic tables because of their flat surface. Some garden owners install open shelves and free-standing cupboards for outdoor use. Pottery and wooden utensils are often displayed in outdoor shelves.

Water can be a blessing or a curse when it comes to the rustic decorating style. Water is useful as an aesthetic feature, but it can be destructive when it comes as rain. To protect your furniture from the rain, you can add a transparent layer of varnish to the wood to make it more resilient to water damage. You can add a layer of paint before finishing with a film of varnish. Just in case the finish wears off quickly, the paint is still there to protect the wood. Natural wood structures can also be made to last longer by waterproofing the surface of the wood.

Sometimes people get very nervous and overwhelmed when it comes to picking the right furniture, especially if it concerns dining room. It is sometimes tough to choose the right furniture out of the countless available choices. Generally, when you go for a rectangular or an oval shaped table it gives a very formal look to your dining room. Whereas square or round shaped tables have a more relaxed and casual ambiance.

If you are buying a dining table separately, the fit and finish of the table become very important. You get matching finished with the table sets. When you’re buying a table separately you have to take care that it matches with the other furniture pieces in your room. Otherwise it may look very odd and mismatched. Your new furniture should always blend in with your existing one.

This is also the reason as to why most of people prefer to choose dining table sets. It is always easier to buy a table set rather than going for table and chairs separately. Once you get a table you should also learn to dress it up nicely. Centre pieces like flowers and candles go very well with all kinds of dining tables.

To start your off in the road to country decor you should go for furniture that fit the bill. Pay attention to carvings because they add interesting facets to old furniture. Rustic tables have hand carvings on them that are obviously made by a crafty artisan from the country. Big armoires are also available for those who have room for these. Twigs are also used as accents to wood furniture.

Beware that rustic furniture may not be as sturdy as the plastic ones you can buy from a design shop. With enough wear and tear, expect the organic material in the wood to start rotting. There are many ways to care for furniture. You have to understand that furnishings are investments you have made in the past.

Tips:

1. Control Pests

Termite exterminators are a dime a dozen. You should spray your furniture regularly, or every spring at least, to get termite eggs out. At the first sign of termites, spray anti-termites to get the eggs at least. Modern ways to kill termites include spraying and fumigation. Tiny holes and black powder that looks like rotted wood pieces can be a sign of termite infestation.

2. Cover Them With Fabric

Fabric, like paint, covers mistakes in construction. A piece of fabric in an attractive color can make a difference in your design. Fabric on wood is attractive especially if there is a prevalent theme. Red and green can be used for Christmas. Red and pink are great for Valentines. You can change the fabrics more often if you like.
