With a population of half a million and a reputation as an overly commercialized tourist centre, Malaga is best visited between the months of May and October. I had Malaga on my itinerary during my summer
holidays in Spain. I was struck by the affluence and lifestyle of the people in
Malaga.

Although Spain is not the richest country in the world by far, the appearance of affluence here is enhanced when one comes in from neighboring Morocco. While Malaga has its share of low income inhabitants and areas, the overall picture here is one of prosperity in comparison with its neighbor. The beaches are quiet spots and although not that spectacular, they are definitely worth a visit. Downtown you will find the heart of the city buzzing with shops and trading activities.

Walking among these streets will give you a good idea of life here in
Malaga. I wanted a taste of Malaga history, so I headed to the Baroque Cathedral. An interesting story lends an air of patriotism to the unfinished Baroque cathedral. Apparently the Bishop who was in charge of its construction felt that the funds would be better utilized if diverted to the British in their efforts in the American War of Independence. A good sight seeing stop in Malaga is the Picasso museum. I learnt a bit about the city’s little known past from the various exhibits here.

For shopping and browsing through locally manufactured trinkets and other knick knacks a visit downtown is recommended. The people here are friendly and engaging- a bit of useless trivia I got was from a waiter who told me that actor Antonio Banderas is a
Malaga native.
