To start your off in the road to country decor you should go for furniture that fit the bill. Pay attention to carvings because they add interesting facets to old furniture. Rustic tables have hand carvings on them that are obviously made by a crafty artisan from the country. Big armoires are also available for those who have room for these. Twigs are also used as accents to wood furniture.

Beware that rustic furniture may not be as sturdy as the plastic ones you can buy from a design shop. With enough wear and tear, expect the organic material in the wood to start rotting. There are many ways to care for furniture. You have to understand that furnishings are investments you have made in the past.

Tips:

1. Control Pests

Termite exterminators are a dime a dozen. You should spray your furniture regularly, or every spring at least, to get termite eggs out. At the first sign of termites, spray anti-termites to get the eggs at least. Modern ways to kill termites include spraying and fumigation. Tiny holes and black powder that looks like rotted wood pieces can be a sign of termite infestation.

2. Cover Them With Fabric

Fabric, like paint, covers mistakes in construction. A piece of fabric in an attractive color can make a difference in your design. Fabric on wood is attractive especially if there is a prevalent theme. Red and green can be used for Christmas. Red and pink are great for Valentines. You can change the fabrics more often if you like.

Most people already understand that wood as a material provides that warmth we all want, probably because it is unnatural material. Although we can choose one piece, whatever the color may be, everything else in the space has to work well with it so that a uniform look ensues.

To do this effectively, simply paint the other pieces to match, contrast or complement the pieces, or purchase pieces already painted a certain color. Therefore, a person can decorate a particular room in vibrant colors that really packs a punch, or sticking with the more monochromatic look.

Complementary colors are those that are a few shades away from another color, basically neighboring in the color wheel. Contrasting colors, on the other hand, are found on the opposite side of the color wheel and can really create a lot of interest and excitement in any given space.

Anyone can attest to the fact that the solid wood furnishings are a lifelong, or near lifelong investment. So, even if they do cost more than the other pieces made of MDF, for example, they can always work in any decor. That means that a consumer only has to purchase something one time, and they have the ability to change it by sanding it down, painting, or staining it a different color.
